New Math Program
Today I received a new math program for my children to try out. It's the 3rd one. I've seen Saxon (looks very boring), and A Beka (so much repetition, yet very comprehensive), and Math U See (a little different, but also ok). This is Right Start and it uses an abacus. It is very Montessori-ish. The whole idea is to "learn" math, not just rote memorization, but to learn how to think mathematically. So many tools came with it: a dry erase board, colored blocks, wood blocks, popcicle sticks, a balancer, a clock to figure out time, geoboards, an abacus, lesson plans, workbook, appendixes.... I'm really excited. If our first lessons go well, I'll get it for Rebecca too. She's at a stand still starting to hate math...not good. Maybe this will change her mind.

This is called Right Start Math. The website is http://www.alabacus.com and you can learn more about this there. I think it has some great tools to make math fun and lots of games to play to learn and understand the concepts. I have friends who swear by it, however, it hasn't been the best choice for me because of the heavy parent involvement, and it only goes up through middle school. Since writing this post, we have been to a homeschool convention and have decided to use Math-U-See as a foundational math believing it is conceptionally sound. We will supplement with Right Start and some other math tools/helps.
