Male Authors

I have a newfound respect for men who write. After observing and trying to help Jon these last few days, with minimal writing assignments mind you, (like, write 3 words type thing), today he looks at me and says, with a hand on his forehead, "Mom, I just can't think anymore. My brain hurts, I just can't do it anymore." Poor thing, and he was serious! Like about to cry!

So, I've decided to let it lie. He's a dang smart kid! I can show him things and talk about stuff with him and he gets it, but to write it down is so hard...and I mean, even coloring is hard for him. I even got him a handwriting program called "Handwriting without Tears". He can do a page of practice and that's it. Some days he does well and can keep going other days he just can't.

So, I'm open for suggestions. Ed says maybe just get more computer programs for him. You know he loves the video game type learning, i.e. DS, leapster, Wii. If he just has to click you know he knows all the answers, but to write it.... But I'm under the impression to try not to do that type stuff til they are older, like 5th grade. Then you think about everything done online or computer anymore so they need to learn to type...but they need to learn to write first!

I guess I'll just continue little bits at a time and observe through the next year and a half to see how he does. Hopefully by 3rd grade writing won't be as difficult for him.

Hence, seeing how difficult it is for my little boy to put pen to paper, I've a newfound respect and awe for male writers and authors.

My boys have a hard time writing as well. You might try just some fine motor games to increase his strength- it might make it easier to write. Things like stringing small beads, picking things up with tweezers, play-doh, etc.

Sounds like you are doing great!

Ok tell him Aunty needs an author I do I am making books soon in the near future and I need a good story about animals! I could defently use one from Jon so tell him to write a few and then we will see what animals suit his fancy. Right now we have been working on Chicken stories. Since we are getting chickens and if he wants he can name one of our chickens if he'll take the chicken on adventures in stories he writes for aunty!!
Hope that will help!

Thanks for the advise! You know, I tried Writing with Ease but the whole pen to paper thing was just too much. I think I actually have him writing much more then I think, I mean, after spelling, grammar and math. I started the writing with ease, but it was hard for him. I think he just needs a bit more time to mature. I am looking for good writing programs for my oldest, though, so I'll check those out. Thanks! And Thomas Jefferson has a huge LDS following, I found out, which is interesting. There is a small group in a nearby city where I live so I will be checking that out soon. Will keep it posted!
