Snow School Day

We've had a few snow days this year, (and it started in Dec for Christmas).  But for us, school goes on, which I think is fabulous, because then I don't feel so guilty missing "school" inside for "school" outside when the weather is much warmer.

We have traditional school days where the kids do some reading, writing, grammar, spelling, handwriting, math, phonics, critical thinking, map work.  We also do history/geography/science together (well, mostly together; sometimes we lose Savannah to Barbies).

Some days we paint.  Most days we color.  Some days we do legos.  We play games (most recently we taught the kids how to play Settlers and DaVionci's Challenge).

Sometimes school is jump start on the computer (the exception, not the rule).  I love that we have a treadmill, just in case someone needs to burn off excess energy, or frustration.

I'm always trying to find the balance between curriculum and unschooling.  I believe in both.  :)

Recently, I'm going to count our watching of "Anne of Green Gables, and "The Sequel" for school.  It is like a classic come to life.  I mean, some books are made into movies, but the dialogue is so wonderful!

Here's what our day looked like today, on a "snow" day.

Language Arts, maps, reading, phonics, writing...and coloring (for Bella)

Meanwhile, Savannah played legos independently, building a magnificent tower.

Ed helps Rebecca build Lego Kingdom.  We studied Queen Elizabeth today, whom she really liked much more then Bloody Mary.  She pretended to have the evil Philip II of Spain kill William the Silent who won the war for the Dutch against Philip II, but then Philip had William killed, of course.  Yeah.  Middle Ages.

Ed also helped Jonathan build his Lego airplane.  Lots of pride and joy in that project.  Now, if it will only stay together....
